Sympisodon Sp. ( Discus )
Discus fish (Symphysodon spp.) are striking freshwater fish native to the slow-moving rivers and floodplains of the Amazon Basin in South America. Known for their disc-like, laterally compressed bodies, they have a distinctive round shape with vibrant patterns and colors, making them popular among aquarium enthusiasts. Their hues can range from brilliant shades of red, blue, green, and yellow to more subdued earth tones, often enhanced by intricate lines or marbling across their bodies.
Discus fish are part of the cichlid family and grow up to 6–8 inches (15–20 cm) in diameter. They are social fish that prefer to live in small groups, although they can be shy and sensitive, requiring well-maintained, calm environments. Ideal conditions include soft, slightly acidic water (pH 6.0–7.0) with temperatures between 82–86°F (28–30°C).
In the wild, they inhabit densely vegetated areas and are often found near submerged roots or fallen logs. Their diet consists of small insects, larvae, and plant material, but in captivity, they thrive on a variety of foods, including flakes, pellets, and live or frozen treats like bloodworms.
Though beautiful, discus fish require careful maintenance as they are sensitive to water quality, making them more suited to experienced aquarists. With proper care, these peaceful fish can live for 10 years or more, becoming the centerpiece of any freshwater aquarium.
